External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will attend the G7 Foreign Ministers' gathering alongside partner nations at Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay, France, this week, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday. He will join his counterparts from the club of developed countries at the invitation of French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot. The MEA said Jaishankar may engage in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event.

Summarising the agenda, Pascal Confavreux, the spokesperson for the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, said the meeting will occur shortly after an informal assembly of ministers during the UN General Assembly. This will act as a preparatory phase preceding the G7 Leaders' Summit.

"All this culminates in the preparation of the summit of Evian. It will take place between the 13th and 15th of June," he said, noting that the foreign ministers' discussions will assist in shaping the outcomes for the leaders' discussions. The gathering will tackle both urgent crises and long-term structural challenges.

"Obviously, in the way that we will try as much as we can, not only to have this informal gathering of what is generally speaking a G7 meeting, but also to have some concrete results," the official stated, underlining the importance of actionable conclusions.

Rebuilding Ukraine

The G7 Foreign Ministers' Gathering is poised to address pressing global issues, such as the conflict in Ukraine, rebuilding initiatives, maritime safety, and reforms in international governance, as outlined by French officials.

A major emphasis will be placed on Ukraine, with sessions scheduled to discuss reconstruction and overarching regional security. "The second session will be on reconstruction. The aim is to have at least three impactful results," an official, mentioning conversations on nuclear safety, humanitarian demining, and funding for reconstruction.

The importance of international financial entities like the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will also be underscored, especially in facilitating investments for Ukraine's restoration.

Maritime Threats, Security

The foreign ministers' conversations will further encompass maritime security and global supply chains amid the disruption at the Strait of Hormuz due to the Iran war.

"We will also tackle broader threats such as narco-traffic, maritime security, which is related to critical minerals," Confavreux said. A specific session dedicated to maritime routes and the exercise of navigational freedom is also anticipated.
