Veteran Malayalam actor-director E. A. Rajendran passed away Thursday at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy that spanned theatre, cinema, and television. He breathed his last at his residence in Pattathanam, Kollam, after battling prolonged, age-related health issues.
Rajendran had been undergoing treatment for some time. In a past interview, he had addressed concerns about his health, saying, “I reduced weight as per the doctor's advice to manage my sugar levels. Age is also catching up, and I need to stay careful.” His passing marks the end of a decades-long artistic journey rooted deeply in Kerala's cultural landscape.
His mortal remains will be kept in Kollam for public homage, allowing fans and colleagues to pay their last respects before being taken to his hometown. The funeral is scheduled to be held on March 27 at his residence in Thrithallur, Thrissur.
Rajendran is survived by his wife, Sandhya Rajendran, and son Divyadarshan. Sandhya is the daughter of noted theatre personality O. Madhavan and sister of Mukesh, making Rajendran a familiar figure within the industry both professionally and personally.
The news of his demise was also shared by actor and MLA Mukesh on social media. In a brief Facebook post, Mukesh wrote in Malayalam, “Condolences.... Famous artist. Kalidasa Art Center Director, My brother-in-law, E. A. Rajendran passed away.”

Illustrious Career
E. A. Rajendran's journey into the arts began at a young age, with school theatre playing a crucial role in shaping his passion. He went on to formally train at the prestigious National School of Drama in Delhi, graduating with top honours, and later pursued a television course at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
Over the years, he appeared in around 60 films, taking on a wide range of roles—from intense villains to layered character parts—in films such as Pranayavarnangal, Daya, and Pattabhishekam.
Beyond films, Rajendran remained deeply connected to theatre. He played a key role in Kalidasa Kalakendram, a renowned troupe founded by his father-in-law, and even won the Kerala State Government Award for Best Play in 1987 for adapting a Russian novel for the stage. He was also a familiar face on television and served as Chairman of the State Horticulture Corporation.
From stage to screen, Rajendran's work reflected versatility, discipline, and quiet dedication—qualities that made him a respected name in Malayalam arts and culture.
