Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan, who found himself at the receiving end of a woman commuter's wrath after a rally led by him led to a massive traffic jam, has said such situations are inevitable during rallies.

Triggered by traffic snarls during the BJP's demonstration over the women's reservation bill in Worli on Tuesday, the woman got out of her car and confronted the minister for disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters.

Asking why the rally could not be held at an open ground nearby, she yelled at him, asking him to clear the road. “Get out of here. You are causing a traffic jam,” she said.

As Mahajan attempted to pacify her, the woman continued her tirade, saying, “Did you not understand? What is wrong with you? There are hundreds of people waiting.” When a police official intervened, she snapped back at him.

A video of the entire episode quickly went viral.

Mahajan Responds

Speaking about the episode, the minister said permission was taken for the rally, and that traffic disruption during protests is unavoidable.

"Traffic is routinely disrupted whenever a morcha is held in the city. On Tuesday, a woman arrived at the site visibly angry and began shouting, using language that was inappropriate. Instead of lodging a formal complaint, she confronted officials, saying, 'How can you do this?' 'How can you close the roads?'" Mahajan said, addresing the media.

"She asked that the morcha be shifted to an open ground and said the road should not be blocked unnecessarily. She was also rude towards the police personnel present. Officials maintained restraint and informed her that the road would be cleared within 10–15 minutes. However, she was unwilling to listen despite repeated attempts to reason with her. The situation also left several women workers at the site visibly agitated, added Mahajan.

The Constitution Amendment Bill regarding delimitation was defeated in the Lower House of Parliament on April 17. During the division of votes on the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, 2026, 298 votes were cast in favour and 230 against it.

A two-thirds majority is required to pass any Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. The Opposition parties have alleged that the bill, linked to a delimitation exercise, if implemented, would have shrunk the representation of the southern states.
