With people increasingly turning to artificial intelligence bots to chat about everything from finance and legal issues to personal and emotional states, the spotlight is on privacy and stakes are high. Users have been calling for their conversations to stay private no matter what, which has led to various AI platforms to launch incognito modes. The latest to add the feature is WhatsApp. The Meta-owned chat platform has introduced Incognito Chat with Meta AI, a new feature that enables completely private conversations with the AI assistant, according to WhatsApp.
WhatsApp's Incognito Chat becomes particularly relevant when users want to discuss personal, emotional, or health issues or want some guidance about finances and legal matters from the AI — without leaving a trace about what was discussed. Built on Meta's Private Processing technology, the incognito mode ensures that chats are invisible to others and to Meta itself.
Unlike other incognito-style modes that may still allow the platform to view queries and responses, Meta states that Incognito Chat is truly private. Conversations are processed in a secure environment that Meta cannot access, messages are not saved, and they disappear by default once the session ends.
The mode also hides identifying information like the user's IP address, keeps messages encrypted during processing, and automatically deletes the temporary chat when closed.
Incognito Chat with Meta AI is rolling out gradually over the coming months on both WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. The feature is optional for users.
Meta is also planning to expand private AI interactions on WhatsApp. In the coming months, it will introduce Side Chat with Meta AI, which will offer contextual assistance inside existing conversations using Private Processing, without exposing chat content or interrupting the main discussion.
