Apple is preparing a major shift in how its voice assistant works. The US tech giant is reportedly planning to open Siri to rival artificial intelligence services on its iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the change is expected to arrive with iOS 27 and would allow users to choose which AI system handles their requests. Instead of relying mainly on its current partnership with ChatGPT, Siri could route queries to other tools such as Gemini from Alphabet Inc. or Claude, developed by Anthropic, the report added.

The update would introduce a new system in iOS that lets third-party AI apps connect directly with Siri through Apple's ecosystem. For this, users may be able to download their preferred chatbot apps from the App Store and select which one responds to specific tasks, such as search, writing or coding.
With this move, users would gain more control and flexibility over their use of AI tools on Apple devices. The overhaul could also create a new revenue stream, as Apple may take a share of subscription fees from third-party AI services integrated into its ecosystem.
This marks a notable change in Apple's strategy. Siri, launched over a decade ago, has remained a core feature of the iPhone. By opening it to outside services, Apple is aiming to position its devices as a broader AI platform, hoping to catch up with its Silicon Valley peers.
Why Is Apple Doing This?
Apple's new “Extensions” system aims to level the playing field for the AI players while giving users more control over which AI powers their requests. Instead of relying on a single provider, users could switch between different services as needed. This would be similar to third-party keyboards or browsers. The strategy positions Apple as a central hub for AI as Siri remains the gateway through which these AIs must pass. At the same time, this opens a new revenue opportunity for the company.

Apple is expected to preview these features at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the report added.
