Gujarat Titans produced one of their most complete performances of the IPL 2026 season on Thursday, overpowering Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs in Match 66 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The dominant win confirmed GT's place in the top two of the standings, while CSK were officially knocked out of the playoff race after their heavy defeat damaged their already-fragile Net Run Rate.

Asked to bat first, Gujarat's top order dismantled the CSK attack with a relentless display of strokeplay. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan laid the foundation with a commanding 129-run opening stand, their seventh century partnership together, the most by an opening pair in IPL history.

Gill was the first to depart, finishing with 64 from just 37 deliveries, while Sudharsan ended with 84 off 53 balls. Jos Buttler provided the finishing burst, smashing an unbeaten 57 off 27 balls to propel GT to a formidable 229/4.

In reply, CSK's chase unraveled immediately as Mohammed Siraj struck with the first ball of the innings, dismissing Sanju Samson for a golden duck.

Siraj (3/26) then removed Ruturaj Gaikwad (16) and Urvil Patel (0) in the third over, before Kagiso Rabada sent back Matt Short (24). Kartik Sharma (19) was then run out by Shubman Gill's direct hit at the non-striker's end as CSK slumped to 63/5 after seven overs.

Shivam Dube played a counterattacking knock with a rapid 47 off just 17 balls, while Anshul Kamboj also chipped in with 19 off 8, but the innings never recovered.

Rashid Khan (3/18) and Kagiso Rabada (3/32) dismantled the lower order as CSK were bowled out for 140 in only 13.4 overs.

The result has major implications for the IPL 2026 points table. Gujarat Titans have now virtually secured a top-two finish, guaranteeing themselves a place in Qualifier 1 and the crucial advantage of a second opportunity to reach the final.

Despite sitting second behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru on net run rate, GT's top-two finish is mathematically secured since RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad play each other in their final league game, ensuring only one of those sides can finish above Gujarat in the final standings.

For Chennai Super Kings, the defeat ends their IPL 2026 campaign. Entering the match needing a win to stay alive in the playoff race, CSK instead suffered a crushing loss that mathematically eliminated them from top-four contention.
