Harmanpreet Singh-led India will begin the second stage of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 with a stern test against Olympic gold medalists the Netherlands, with their push for a second world title entering a crucial phase.
India qualified for the second round after finishing second in Pool D, despite suffering a 2-4 defeat to England in their second match. They had earlier beaten Wales 3-1 before securing a 5-3 victory over Pakistan in a high-scoring encounter.
The biggest concern for India heading into the Netherlands clash will be their inability to maintain control after making strong starts. Against Pakistan, India raced to 3-0 and later led 4-1, only for their arch-rivals to fight back and reduce the deficit before India eventually secured a 5-3 win.

A similar pattern emerged against England, when India held a 2-1 half-time lead but conceded three goals in the second half to go down 2-4.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, have looked far more convincing in the tournament so far. The Dutch side won all three of their Pool A matches, defeating New Zealand 5-1, Argentina 3-1 and Japan 4-1. That makes them one of the biggest attacking threats India will face in the competition.
For India, the challenge will extend beyond the quality of the opposition. Playing against the Netherlands at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen will also mean dealing with a vociferous home crowd. The venue, which can accommodate around 10,000 spectators, is expected to be packed with Dutch supporters.
The match also carries added importance because of the World Cup's new format. The traditional quarter-final stage has been scrapped, with the top two teams from Pools A and D moving into Pool E.
The teams then play two additional matches, while the result from their earlier meeting against the team that came through the same original pool is carried forward. The top two teams in Pool E will advance directly to the semi-finals.
As England topped Pool D with three wins, their victory over India means they enter the second stage with three points already secured, while India begin Pool E without points from their carried-over result. The Netherlands, meanwhile, carry three points from their win over Argentina.
Pool E And Schedule
India have been drawn in Pool E alongside England, the Netherlands and Argentina. The team will be looking to beat the Netherlands to secure its first point in Pool E.
Venue
The match will be played at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
Date And Time
India will play its first match of the second stage of the tournament against the Netherlands on Saturday, with the match starting at 7:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time.
