Sonowal Sworn-In as the First BJP Chief Minister of Assam

With his government, Sonowal will end 15 years of Congress rule in Assam.

Sarbananda Sonowal took his oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of Assam. Former CM Tarun Gogoi was seen in attendance at the oath-taking ceremony of Sonowal and the Council of Ministers.

Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya dissolved the 13th Assam Assembly under powers conferred by the Constitution on Monday.

In an interview to NDTV on Tuesday morning, Sonowal said it was a “great honour for Assam and him” that the Prime Minister attended the swearing-in ceremony.

  • Sonowal is Assam’s second tribal chief minister after Jogen Hazarika in the 1970s.
  • He started out as a student politician, and joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in 2001.
  • In 2011, Sonowal left AGP and joined the BJP, perhaps one of the biggest turning points of his political career.
  • He joined Prime Minister Modi’s cabinet as the Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs.
  • He is credited with challenging the controversial Illegal Migrants’ Determination by Tribunal Act in the Supreme Court, which became a major rallying point in his election campaign.
  • As Chief Minister of Assam, Sonowal has promised to seal the Indo-Bangladesh border within two years, tackling the problem of infiltration.
