(Bloomberg) -- Keir Starmer, the Labour Party's spokesman on Brexit, is in talks to become an adviser at the law firm that backed Gina Miller's Article 50 court challenge.
Starmer would work for Mishcon de Reya LLP's Academy, a department that "leads new thinking and develops the potential of everyone in the firm." It would likely be a part-time position that wouldn't require him to leave Parliament.
He worked at Mishcon as an adviser for several months last year, making 18,000 pounds ($23,000) for 24 hours of work. The 54-year-old Starmer, who was previously the head of the Crown Prosecution Service, is widely viewed as one of the favorites to be the next Labour Party leader.
Starmer's office didn't provide a comment when contacted by Bloomberg News.
James Cleverly, a Conservative MP who supported leaving the European Union, called the potential appointment a conflict of interest with his role as shadow Brexit secretary. In a letter, he called on Starmer to publish names of clients he works for at Mishcon and to clarify Labour's position on MPs taking jobs outside Parliament.
London-based Mishcon took what was once considered a long-shot challenge to Prime Minister Theresa May's ability to trigger Brexit without parliamentary approval all the way to the country's Supreme Court. The justices backed the case in January, forcing May to win lawmaker support.
