Water Level In Mumbai Lakes Remains Below 9% Despite Heavy Rains — Check Latest Levels

On Monday, the water level in seven lakes was recorded below 10% at 8.6% of the total capacity of 14,47,363 million litres of useful water content.

Water levels in Mumbai’s seven major lakes remained below 10% on Monday, despite heavy rainfall in the city over the last 24 hours. These lakes are critical for Mumbai’s drinking water supply, and their replenishment is heavily dependent on the monsoon rain.

The seven lakes are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi. These lakes are spread across Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts, with a total capacity of useful content at 14.47 lakh million litres.

On Monday, the water level in seven lakes was recorded below 10% at 8.6% of the total capacity of 14,47,363 million litres of useful water content. This marked a further fall compared to 8.69% recorded on Sunday.

In the past 24 hours, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Tansa lakes logged a combined useful water content level of 69,941 million litres. This marked 10.11% compared to their actual capacity of 6,94,582 million litres. Among them, Modak Sagar recorded the highest individual level, holding nearly 26% of its own full capacity of useful water content.

Overall, Vihar Lake has the highest capacity of useful water content at 33.30% of its capacity of 27,698 million litres. Collectively, the seven lakes hold 1,24,471 million litres of usable water, which amounts to just 8.6% of their total storage capacity. On June 15, the collective useful water capacity of these lakes stood at 1,25,825 million litres.

The drop in water levels occurred despite heavy rainfall in Mumbai and several other districts of Maharashtra. The IMD also issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts for June 16.

As of 6 a.m. on Monday, Upper Vaitarna recorded 4 mm of rainfall, while Modak Sagar and Tansa received 23 mm and 28 mm, respectively. Middle Vaitarna saw 60 mm of rainfall. During the same period, Bhatsa recorded 33.00 mm, Vihar received 43 mm, and Tulsi registered 66 mm of rainfall.

According to the data recorded on Sunday morning, all lakes received rainfall ranging between 7 mm and 43 mm over the previous 24 hours.

Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday, leaving roads waterlogged during the morning hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the city, anticipating heavy to very heavy rain. Based on IMD's latest weather forecast, moderate rainfall is expected on June 17 and 18 in the city. On the other hand, the weather agency has issued an orange alert for June 19. The IMD predicts moderate rain in several parts of Mumbai on June 20.
