Chennai Faces Multiple Flight Delays After Dense Fog Blankets City — Details Here

Around 25 flights that were set to depart from the Chennai Airport experienced delays of more than 30 minutes due to the fog.

Severe fog conditions in Chennai have hit flight operations on Tuesday. The heavy fog that shrouded the southern city cleared up after a while, but not without leaving flight services disrupted. 

According to reports, six international flights were diverted between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Tuesday, with some carriers having to take passengers to nearby cities. Two domestic flights were also diverted due to the fog. 

Incoming international flights from destinations such as Muscat and Dubai were diverted to nearby airports in Tirupati and Hyderabad.

Additionally, around 25 flights that were set to depart from Chennai airport experienced delays of more than 30 minutes due to the fog.

Budget carrier IndiGo posted a series of advisories.

“Low visibility and fog over Chennai may lead to some delays. We're keeping a close watch on the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly."

"We request you stay updated on your flight status before heading to the airport. Be assured, our teams are here to assist you at every step and ensure support,” it said in a post on X.

The company also issued a link for customers to seek refund if they wanted.

Air India also issued a notice to passengers, asking them to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

“Poor visibility due to dense fog is affecting flight operations in Chennai today,” it said.

Along with the dense fog, Chennai also experienced high humidity and low temperatures. The India Meteorological Department had predicted mist and haze in the city for the day.

“Mist/Haze is likely to prevail during morning hours at isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area,” the Feb. 3 bulletin of the Met department said.
