US stocks pulled back from a record high as the US waits for Iran to respond to a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, while investors parsed a stream of earnings.
The S&P 500 Index fell 0.4% on Thursday, with nine of 11 sectors declining, led by materials and energy. The Nasdaq 100 Index dropped 0.1%. West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up about 0.2% at around $95 a barrel, after Iran's Fars said explosions were heard near Bandar Abbas, a port city on the Strait of Hormuz.
Stocks set all-time closing highs the past two days. On Wednesday, solid results from chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. helped drive the gains, building on strength from megap tech firms such as Alphabet Inc. earlier in the earnings cycle.
"Everyone's primed to see things de-escalate" between Iran and the US, GuideStone portfolio manager Josh Chastant said. While oil prices have retreated, they're well above pre-war levels, he said, leaving companies questioning future energy costs. Meantime, "earnings season has been one almost for the ages."

Chastant is optimistic about equities for the rest of the year. He likes US large-caps on the back of surging earnings, and small-caps as valuations are still low while firms are also reporting strong earnings.

| "We see scope for further tech-led upside to S&P 500 7,750 and as high as 9,000 should the public's 'animal spirits' truly move into high gear," Evercore ISI strategist Julian Emanuel wrote in a Thursday note. Among drivers he highlighted: a strong earnings season, news of Anthropic PBC's computing agreement with SpaceX to meet AI demand as both are large potential IPO candidates, and a steep rally in semiconductor stocks since late March. In Thursday earnings news, Whirlpool Corp. sank 12% after the appliance maker slashed its earnings forecast and said that the Iran war amplified consumer cost of living concerns. Eye-glass purveyor Warby Parker Inc. jumped 23% after revenue beat estimates. Datadog Inc. soared 31% after raising its outlook. Traders are looking to post-market results from Block Inc. In February, the financial technology company announced job cuts, which it described as a bet on AI. The focus will be on whether its "AI-enabled workforce reduction enhances productivity without compromising execution," Evercore ISI's Emanuel said. Signs of strength could dim expectations for Fed easing. Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. data on Thursday showed mounting tech-sector layoffs last month, raising the year-to-date total to a three-year high, even as overall private-sector job-cut announcements receded. Weekly initial jobless claims rebounded slightly after falling in the previous week to near the lowest levels in decades. The "steady but not inflationary labor market" offers a silver lining for the Fed, Stephen Juneau, a Bank of America US economist, wrote in a Thursday note. Sectors in Focus
