Indian equity benchmarks extended declines for the fifth consecutive trading session, registering their longest losing streak since July 24. The Sensex settled 281.09 points, or 0.36%, lower at 77,728.16, extending its decline by 116.27 points from the provisional close. The Nifty 50 ended 78.35 points, or 0.32%, lower at 24,287.65, falling another 52.15 points from its 3:15 pm level.
Oil prices were broadly steady after a strong advance last week. Brent crude traded below $89 a barrel after gaining about 6% in the previous week, while West Texas Intermediate held near $82.
Fresh fighting in Lebanon and attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz have complicated efforts to reach an agreement to end the US-Iran conflict. The two sides are approaching the formal end of their ceasefire, with negotiations showing no clear path towards reopening the key waterway.
Israel said it had killed 11 people, including a senior Hezbollah commander, in strikes on southern Lebanon. The fighting has added to uncertainty around the wider Middle East conflict and the prospects for a diplomatic settlement between Washington and Tehran.
The US is also preparing an "economic isolation" plan as negotiations remain stalled over the Strait of Hormuz.
Wall Street offered a positive lead despite the geopolitical uncertainty. The S&P 500 recorded a third consecutive weekly gain and reached another record high last week following a strong earnings season, although the index finished Friday lower amid signs of softer US consumer spending.
US equity futures were little changed in early Asian trading. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 11 points, or 0.02%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.1% and Nasdaq-100 futures advanced 0.2%.
Gold rose 0.4% to around $4,390 an ounce as investors continued to assess developments in the Middle East and their potential impact on global markets.

Stock Market Live: Deven Choksey Research Maintains 'Accumulate' On Supriya Lifescience; Sees Growth Driven By CDMO, Specialty Portfolio
Deven Choksey Research said Supriya Lifescience is entering a strong growth phase, supported by a broader product portfolio and rising contributions from recently launched cardiovascular, ADHD and anesthetic products.
The brokerage noted that management remains confident of achieving its Rs 1,000 crore FY27 revenue target, despite around Rs 35 crore of sales being deferred due to the Lote MIDC water shortage. It added that planned maintenance shutdowns and new product ramp-ups should support growth visibility.
The research house highlighted that Q1 FY27 EBITDA margin of about 25% was below the company's full-year guidance of 33-35%, largely due to temporary factors such as higher power costs and deferred sales. It expects margins to recover as these headwinds ease and operating leverage improves.
Deven Choksey Research also sees key growth catalysts from the Ambernath formulation facility, an upcoming EU audit in November 2026, and the Rs 200 crore Phase-I expansion at Patalganga.
The brokerage said Supriya's next phase of growth will be driven by its move up the value chain through CDMO opportunities, formulations and complex products, including a large anesthetic CDMO contract under discussion.
Maintaining an 'Accumulate' rating, Deven Choksey Research has set a target price of Rs 841, implying an upside potential of 7.4% from current levels.

EBITDA margin expanded to 24% from 22.2% a year ago, driven by a richer product mix and focus on specialty pharmaceuticals.
The company said its specialty strategy continues to drive growth, with the top five products contributing 39% of sales. The specialty portfolio accounted for 36% of gross profit, and management expects the specialty mix to increase further over time.
Rubicon Research said it deliberately exited lower-margin products, prioritising profitability over revenue growth.
