IDBI Capital Report
During May, Indian steel prices declined by 11% month-on-month led by imposition of export duty on steel. Even Chinese hot rolled coil steel prices fell by 7% month-on-month.
Although coking coal fell 11% month-on-month to $429/tonne in May, it remains well above historical levels.
Coking coal prices have increased ~three times in the past one year but these prices are unsustainable in our view.
For April, global steel production increased 1.2% month-on-month to 163 million tonnes while Chinese steel production increased by 5% month-on-month to 93 million tonnes.
Chinese steel exports were flat month-on-month at five million tonnes. Meanwhile, Indian crude steel output increased by 6% YoY to 101 million tonnes.
