The Nifty recorded an impressive 19% YoY gain in FY22 despite challenges on multiple fronts. Domestic institutional investor flows into equities in FY22 were the highest ever at $26.8 billion versus outflows of $18.4 billion in FY21, while foreign institutional investors witnessed equity outflows of $17.1 billion after five consecutive years of inflows.
The Nifty Midcap 100 (up 25% YoY) and Nifty small cap 100 (up 29% YoY) outperformed the benchmark.
Top gainers in the sectoral space were utilities (up 63%), metals (up 62%), media (up 54%), oil and gas (up 42%), telecom (up 42%), and technology (up 40%). While private banks, consumer, autos, and healthcare underperformed.
Nifty trades at a 12-month forward price/earning of 19.8 times, near to its long period average of 19.3 times (at 3% premium). price/book, at 3.2 times, is at a 21% premium to its historical average.
