Born Satinder Pal Singh in Bajrawar village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, Sartaaj's journey is anything but typical. Before stepping into the spotlight, he lived a grounded life and has often said he didn't initially aspire to be a performer. His early years were rooted in simplicity, performing at school-level gatherings and local Bal Sabhas, long before global stages came calling.

Sartaaj holds an honours degree in music, followed by an MPhil and a PhD in Sufi singing from Punjab University, Chandigarh—making him one of the few mainstream artists with a doctorate in music. He also spent six years teaching at the same university, shaping young musicians while continuing his own artistic journey. Adding to this, he studied Persian, which deeply influences his lyrical style and philosophical undertones. During his college years, he adopted the pen name “Sartaaj.

His breakthrough came unexpectedly in 2008 when organisers in Toronto discovered his performances online and invited him to perform for a Punjabi diaspora audience. From there, his career took off globally. He went on to win the Brit Asia TV Music Award for Best International Act and later performed at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London—milestones that cemented his international appeal.
