Harsh Mander, author and founder of the campaign "Karwan-e-Mohabbat", and founders of the the fact-checking website ALT News, Pratik Sinha and Muhammed Zubair, were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The award-winning Indian author was nominated by the directors of the Peace Research Institute Oslo. The shortlisted names were presented by Henrik Urdal, director of the institute.
The campaign Karwan-e-Mohabbat, meaning “Caravan of Love” was founded by Mander in 2017, to show solidarity to victims of hate crimes.
The institute said in a statement “the situation for Muslims in India has become increasingly difficult”, under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration.
“Mander is an important voice for religious tolerance and dialogue," the statement said, adding the campaign is an important rallying point for those opposing inter-religious conflict and violence.
