Jony Ive and Marc Newson from LoveFrom teamed up with Ferrari's Flavio Manzoni to reveal the instrumentation and interior of the brand's first fully electric vehicle, the Ferrari Luce, in San Francisco. The cockpit of the Luce is designed by LoveFrom.

Ferrari said that LoveFrom was given “the creative space to define the project's design direction from the outset to translate a new, cross-disciplinary design language into an authentic Ferrari experience.” LoveFrom is the design firm Ive founded after leaving Apple in 2019. The firm was acquired by OpenAI for $6.5 billion last year.

Ive was present to unveil the Luce interior at the San Francisco event, and the EV's instrument aesthetics drew stark similarities with the iPhone. Engadget's Tim Stevens even admitted that it's like “I'm writing about a new iPhone and not the latest Ferrari.”

“If you're familiar with the designs that Apple produced under Ive's tenure, particularly in the era beginning with the iPhone 4, you'll feel right at home here,” Stevens wrote.

The key features a yellow panel set against an E Ink background. The windshield wiper control on the steering wheel is a small dial positioned on the upper-right side. It includes a small magnifying lens that enlarges the current setting — one of four custom Samsung OLED panels.

“There are 40-odd pieces of Corning Gorilla Glass scattered throughout the cockpit, everything from the shifter surround to the slightly convex lenses in the gauge cluster,” Stevens added.

The gauge cluster consists of two OLED screens stacked vertically, and a needle is placed between them to act as a traditional tachometer. The main 10.12-inch OLED display has perforations that allow physical toggle switches to pass through, along with a glass knob for volume control.

In the upper-right corner, a clock can switch modes to become a stopwatch or compass.

Overall, the Luce's interior is conceived “as a single, clean volume, with forms simplified and rationalised in the service of driving,” Ferrari said. Its design places strong emphasis on precise details and perfect symmetry, with circles and squircles shaping its overall look and feel.

Ive famously worked on the Apple Car's interior design for years before that project was scrapped, and the new Ferrari Luce (Italian for light) offers a glimpse of what an Apple car could be like — if it had seen the light of day.
