Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. has been fined Rs 50 lakh by Bombay High Court for defying an order in a camphor trademark battle with Mangalam Organics Ltd.

Mangalam Organics took Patanjali Ayurved to court for copying their camphor products. The court ordered Patanjali to stop selling them temporarily. However, the Baba Ramdev-founded company allegedly kept selling these products despite the court's order, totaling Rs 49.5 lakh in sales. In a June 2024 affidavit, Patanjali apologised and promised to follow the court's rules moving forward.

The high court bench comprising Justice RI Chalga observed that while the direction to stop such products was given to Patanjali in August last year, the sale of the said products continued well into July this year.

The court found the breach to be intolerable and imposed a fine.

It was the case of Mangalam Organics through a set of documents that Patanjali Ayurved continued to sell the disputed camphor product as recently as July 3, 4, and 8, 2024. Notably, Patanjali's website displayed the product for sale on July 8, 2024.

Mangalam Organics further submitted that despite court orders, Patanjali Ayurved repeatedly violated the temporary order issued against it. The court therefore noted these violations and directed the relevant parties to appear in court and provide details about further sales of the disputed camphor product.

Next hearing has been scheduled for July 19.
