Mahanagar Gas Ltd. (MGL) on Tuesday reassured its customers that domestic piped natural gas (PNG) supply will remain unaffected, despite heightened volatility in global energy markets triggered by rising tensions in the Middle East.
"In view of the prevailing geopolitical developments affecting global energy markets, there have been speculations regarding possible curtailment of gas supplies by MGL to its customers. Currently no reduction in gas availability is being faced by MGL and MGL continues to maintain normal CNG & PNG supplies across its operational areas," it said in a statement.
"It may be noted that MGL receives 100% of gas required to meet domestic household supplies from domestically produced gas. Similarly a large majority of gas required for our CNG supply is also domestically produced," the company added.
In case gas supplies to MGL are curtailed due to issues involving LNG import, there could be "some impact on gas supply to MGLs industrial and commercial customers", the city gas distributor noted. This, however, would be mitigated as almost all of these customers have recourse to "alternative hydrocarbon fuels like FO, LSHS, LDO, LPG etc", it said.
Earlier, social media users on X asked MGL whether consumers should begin rationing gas usage in light of the geopolitical crisis and its impact on global energy prices. "Like many people in Mumbai I am lucky to get piped gas. Can Mahanagar Gas tell customers if we should start rationing usage? Will this supply be affected? Should we be aware? The people who use cylinders have been lumped with a price hike," one user, Anuradha Sengupta, wrote.

Domestic household PNG demand is met through 100% domestically produced gas, ensuring an uninterrupted supply.
Addressing these worries, MGL reiterated that it prioritises household connections and ensures that domestic consumption remains unaffected.
LPG Shortage
As the widening conflict in the Middle East disrupted fuel lifelines, including LPG supplies, the government has prioritised domestic cooking gas supplies to households.
On March 6, the government invoked sparingly used emergency powers to direct oil refineries to ramp up LPG production to increase the availability of domestic cooking gas to avoid potential disruptions due to the widening West Asia conflict.
On March 7, the prices of domestic LPG and commercial cylinders were hiked by Rs 60 and Rs 114.5, respectively.
