Founder and chairman of real estate firm Confident Group, C J Roy, shot himself dead on Friday afternoon in Bengaluru. I-T searches had been underway in the city for the past three days, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told news agency PTI.
Roy, who was in his late 50s, suffered bullet injuries from his licensed firearm at his office near Richmond Circle in the city. Soon after a gunshot was heard, staff members rushed to his room and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead, PTI reported.
The incident occurred between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Confident Group's director had filed a complaint, based on which the police registered a case. When asked whether the case could be treated as abetment to suicide, he said the investigation will proceed based on the complaint.
CJ Roy's Early Life And Family
Roy Chiriankandath Joseph also known as CJ Roy, 57, was born in Kerala and grew up in Bengaluru. His exposure to the property world began early, watching his mother who was a neighbourhood real estate agent, quietly purchase 30–40 plots at a time, build homes, and sell them. Roy managed the accounts and learned the intricacies of land deals and cash flows, knowledge that later shaped his transformative work across Bengaluru and Kerala.
C J Roy is survived by his wife Lini Roy and their two children, son Rohit Roy and daughter Ria Mary Roy. Though his family lived in Dubai, he chose to focus his career and investments in India.
C.J Roy's 'Confident Venture'
Roy began his professional journey in 1990 with conventional nine-to-five jobs at BPL, TVS, and HP before entering the real estate sector. His turning point arrived in 2001 when most Bengaluru developers were focused on central areas, but Roy saw immense potential in Sarjapur — then vast fields with long, empty roads and land priced at around Rs 6 lakh per acre. In 2005, he founded Confident Group. Despite resistance from his family and company directors, only his wife supported the idea. His bold decision to build along the outskirts ultimately proved to be a masterstroke.
CJ Roy's Passion For Cars
Roy's passion for cars began in 1994 with his first vehicle, a Maruti. After being dismissed by a salesperson, he vowed to one day own the world's most iconic cars. Over the years, he built an extraordinary collection that included 12 Rolls-Royces, a Bugatti Veyron, a Koenigsegg Agera, multiple Lamborghinis, a McLaren 720S, and a Mercedes-Maybach. He even tracked down and repurchased his first Maruti, offering Rs 10 lakh to locate it.
CJ Roy's Entertainment And Sports Ventures
In 2007, Roy sponsored an apartment worth Rs 1 crore for the winner of a reality music show on Asianet. Since then, Confident Group has consistently supported reality show winners, including offering Rs 10 lakh to the Bigg Boss Malayalam champion this year. Roy also financed more than 10 Malayalam and Kannada films, such as Casanovva, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, Mei Hoom Moosa, Rangappa Hogbitna, Krazy Loka, and Radhana Ganda.
Confident Group also sponsored international sports teams, including the West Indies cricket team (2013–14) and the Sri Lankan team during the 2016 ICC World Cup. In 2022, Roy's group organised global film awards in Dubai, Singapore, and India, solidifying its presence in the entertainment sector.
Beyond business, Roy supported charitable initiatives, cultural programmes, and efforts to rebuild homes after the devastating 2018 Kerala floods.
What Happened On The Day Of The Incident?
Searches were led by an I-T team from Kerala, and the police are yet to speak with them. On inquiries about the nature of the investigation, Singh said the police had no information about the specific proceedings and added that forensic, ballistic, and crime teams had inspected the spot. He also said there were no confirmed eyewitnesses so far.
In a message posted on its Facebook page, the company paid tribute to its chairman, calling him its "beloved leader".
"Our beloved leader has departed from us, but not from the path he showed us. The values he lived by and the vision he entrusted to us will continue to guide our journey forward," it said, adding that the entire Confident Group family mourns the "sudden and irreparable loss" of its chairman.
