The shortage of LPG has impacted food services across numerous cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. This predicament has compelled various restaurants to close their doors owing to a lack of cooking gas.

In light of the ongoing Middle East war involving Israel, the US, and Iran, Infosys has notified its staff about alterations to the food menu owing to the LPG gas shortage in the nation. Likewise, reports indicate that HCLTech has requested its employees at the Chennai location to work remotely.

Infosys notify employees

Infosys has communicated with its teams working in cities like Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai, highlighting that the operations of the campus' food court will be affected by the LPG scarcity.

Infosys has curtailed live dining operations across its primary locations and eliminated certain food items from the menu due to a deficit in commercial LPG resources, prompting vendors to limit culinary activities, which has disrupted meal services for countless employees.

In a similar vein, the tech powerhouse has notified its personnel at the Pune facility that certain prepared meals will be procured from third-party central kitchens, while alternative cooking techniques using electric devices and biofuel are being enhanced to handle the disturbance.

The notice additionally advises staff to refrain from organizing on-site gatherings that necessitate internal catering.

HCL allows work from home

HCL Technologies Ltd., India's third-largest IT firm, has reportedly granted employees at its Chennai office the ability to telecommute on March 12 and March 13 due to a disruption in cafeteria services caused by a shortage of cooking gas, according to the Mint.

Two senior officials familiar with the matter told Mint, that the company provided staff the option to work from home for those two days as the circumstances impacted food services within the office grounds.

LPG Shortage in India

These updates arise as the availability of LPG cylinders has been disrupted in multiple regions of India is facing a critical LPG shortage as over 50% of its imports, primarily through the Strait of Hormuz, have been affected by the West Asia conflict.

It appears that companies are implementing temporary measures to sustain operations and employee services as the situation continues to govern fuel accessibility.

At the same time, the LPG scarcity is occurring alongside a surge in cooking gas prices. The cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has risen by Rs 60, whereas the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased by Rs 144 in major cities and states throughout the nation.

In reaction, the government has raised local production, shifted C3-C4 hydrocarbon streams to enhance LPG output by more than 25%, and diversified imports from the US, Norway, Canada, Algeria, and Russia.
