Gujarat Government Proposes Changes to Marriage Registration Rules: What We Know So Far

The Gujarat government on Thursday announced a proposed amendment to the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, introducing new procedures for marriage registration in the state.

According to a report by NDTV, the proposal was placed in the Gujarat Assembly under Rule 44 and described as a matter of public importance. The government has also invited objections and suggestions from the public within 30 days before finalising the changes.

Parental Details to Be Mandatory

As per the proposed amendment, couples applying for marriage registration will be required to submit a formal declaration stating whether they have informed their parents about the marriage.

The new rules also make it compulsory to provide details of both parents, including Aadhaar card copies, permanent residential addresses and mobile phone numbers of the mother and father of both the bride and the groom.

After the documents are submitted, the Assistant Registrar will verify the details. Once verification is completed, the parents will be officially informed about the marriage registration. The notification will be sent either electronically or through physical communication within 10 working days.

With these changes, couples will not be able to elope and immediately register their marriage without parental knowledge, as parental information and notification will now form part of the legal registration process, NDTV reported.

30-Day Waiting Period Before Certificate

Another change proposed in the amendment is the introduction of a mandatory 30-day waiting period from the date of application. Only after this period is completed will the Marriage Registration Certificate be issued.

In addition, the system is set to move from maintaining physical records to a centralized online system managed through a State Government Online Portal.

This digital integration is aimed at streamlining the process and maintaining records at the state level.

State Government Invites Public Feedback

The state government has opened a 30-day window to receive public objections and suggestions regarding the proposed amendment.

The rules will be finalised after considering the responses received during this period.
