(Bloomberg) -- Fourteen armed groups from the Central African Republic signed a peace agreement with the government to end more than six years of conflict.
The accord is at least the third attempt since fighting erupted in 2012 to end violence that's left thousands of people dead and forced more than a million others to flee their homes. Signatories to the accord include the so-called Seleka group of mainly Muslim fighters and a Christian militia known as anti-balaka.
The agreement, signed in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, came after negotiations backed by the African Union and the United Nations.
“I'm very happy to see this day,” African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki said at the signing ceremony. “We are happy for the people of CAR.”
