Padmanabhan Sankaranarayanan will take over the reins of Tata Chemicals Ltd. as chairperson from N Chandrasekaran, who stepped down from the position on Wednesday.

Padmanabhan will officially occupy the position on May 30. Here is all you need to know about his notable career and background.

Career

Padmanabhan was initially a non-executive director of Tata Chemicals Ltd. in December 2016.

His career in the Tata group's companies had its start with Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. in 1982, where he dealt with software projects and related logistics for various countries including India.

He served in TCS for over 26 years from 1982 to 2008, and eventually reached the position executive director of human resources off the back of a steady and consistently elevating career trajectory.

He then joined on as executive director of operations of Tata Power from 2008 to 2014. He handled the business of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. He also served on the boards of the operating subsidiaries of the firm.

He served as group chief human resources officer at Tata Sons. He also headed the Tata Business Excellence Group and the Tata Group Ethics function. Padmanabhan has been serving as the chairperson of the Governing Council of Business Excellence since 2014.

He is currently serving as the chairperson of the board of Rallis India Ltd. and also a director on the board of the Associated Building Company Ltd., TCE Group Ltd. and Tata Chemicals North America Inc.

Education

Padmanabhan had his earlier education in Shree Baldevdas Kikani Vidyamandir High School from 1968 to 1974.

After which he pursued his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering from PSG College of Technology from 1975 - 1980 and received an Honours grade.

He then received his postgraduate diploma in Business Management, Systems and Marketing from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in 1982.

He also did an Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School Executive Education in 2011.
