Over the past five fiscal years, more than 21,000 consumer grievances against online food delivery apps have been registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
In a written response to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs BL Verma stated that the FSSAI conducts regular inspections, monitoring, and random sampling of food products sold online through e-commerce platforms, including those from manufacturers, sellers, hotels, and restaurants.
A total of 21,042 grievances were filed with the FSSAI during this period. In 2024-25, the number of grievances stood at 7,482, compared to 4,708 in 2023-24, 4,321 in 2022-23, 3,726 in 2021-22, and 805 in 2020-21.
During 2023-24, the FSSAI took strict action by cancelling 502 licences, suspending 316 licences, and imposing penalties amounting to Rs 74.12 lakh.
The minister emphasised that FSSAI has a strong system in place for addressing consumer complaints and concerns effectively.
"The complaints of consumers received in FSSAI are mainly related to various food safety issues related to adulterated food, unsafe food, substandard food, labelling defects in food and misleading claims & advertisements, etc. through various channels, such as the web portal and mobile app, FSSAI Helpline, Twitter, Facebook, etc., and are directed into a single portal, i.e., the Food Safety Connect Portal, which is part of the online Food Safety Compliance System," Verma said.
