Japanese information technology company NTT DATA has announced the commissioning of its submarine cable, which will be to and from India, worth $400 million.
The 8,100-km-long Malaysia, India, Singapore Transit submarine cable system will be commissioned by June 2025 and can carry over 200 terabits per second. It is also one of the largest cables in Asia and will connect Malaysia, India, Singapore, and Thailand.
This has come as the Japanese tech giant has been making investments worth $500 billion in India on an annual basis and will continue to do so.
Among several other initiatives, NTT Data also announced the launch of its largest data centre campus in India, which will power digital transformation in Navi Mumbai and can hold over 500 MW of power when fully operational.
It is also upgrading and expanding its innovation centre in Bengaluru, which will focus on artificial intelligence, digital twin, and quantum computing projects.
"We are investing $59 billion globally over five years from FY2023 to FY2027 into growth areas, including data centres and AI," Akira Shimada, President and CEO at NTT, said.
The company holds the largest market share in India's data centre business and will continue to invest in it, Shimada said.
Currently, India is one of our top revenue-generating markets, with over 40,000 employees, and NTT Data plans to push that to the top five in the next five years, NTT Data Inc. CEO Abhijit Dubey said.
While the company operates almost two-thirds of its data centres in India on renewable energy, it said that it is committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2030 in all its data centres and operations.
Globally, NTT DATA is the third largest data centre provider and is in the midst of scaling its global capacity from 1,500 MW to over 2,000 MW. In India, it plans to add 400 MW more in the coming years.
