Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi's bail plea will be heard at the Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday, 29 March which was earlier rejected on 20 March, after an arrest warrant against Modi on 18 March by a London court.
PNB fraud accused fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi has been arrested in London, news agency ANI reported quoting the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He will be produced in the court later today.
It’s amusing to see the BJP falling over itself to credit the PM with the Nirav Modi arrest while completely ignoring the fact that it was The Telegraph of London & it’s correspondent who found Nirav Modi, not the PM & his agencies.
News agency PTI reported quoting the UK police that Modi was arrested at Holborn in London.
“Nirav Deepak Modi, (Date of Birth 24.02.71), was arrested on behalf of the Indian Authorities on Tuesday, 19 March, in Holborn," the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
“He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 20 March," the statement added.
Nirav Modi was produced in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 20 March. ANI reported that the next hearing in the case will be held on 29 March.
Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, who was remanded in custody till March 29 by a UK court on Wednesday, is likely to be held in a separate cell in Her Majesty's Prison Wandsworth, which is one of the largest prisons in western Europe, reported news agency PTI.
In the prison in south London, 48-year-old Modi's inmates will include the likes of alleged Dawood henchman Pakistani-origin Jabir Moti, currently undergoing extradition proceedings to the US.
In an official statement the Ministry of External Affairs has said, “We welcome the fact that Nirav Modi has been arrested by the United Kingdom authorities pursuant to the arrest warrant issued by the Westminster Magistrate Court. Government of India continues to actively follow up this matter with the authorities concerned in the UK, with a view to have Nirav Modi extradited to India at the earliest.”
“The legal proceedings will take their own course... In this case, when the process got completed, action was taken... I can confirm there was no delay which can be attributed to anything on our side. (There were) Certain processes which had to be completed.”
A joint CBI-ED team will soon leave for London to assist local authorities in the extradition case of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi whose bail plea will come for hearing before a court on Friday, 29 March, reported PTI.
Joint Director-level officers from both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) have been deputed to leave for London on Wednesday with necessary documents, the news agency added quoting officials.
The ED officer will carry the latest charge sheet filed by the agency against Modi's wife Ami and the recent attachments made by it in the case.
The Indian officials will meet various officers of that country, including those from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and brief them about the charges and fresh evidence against Modi, his family and others in connection with the case.
The Joint team of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrived at the Westminster Magistrate Court in London for Nirav Modi's bail hearing, news agency ANI reported.
Toby Cadman, representing the crown prosecution on behalf of the Indian authorities in London's Westminster Magistrate court, told ANI, “In case Nirav Modi gets bail, we will appeal against it in the High Court. We will do everything to keep him in.”

According to media reports, the prosecutor in Nirav Modi extradition case has claimed that Nirav Modi “threatened to kill” a witness and destroyed evidence.
Cadman also said that there is risk that Nirav Modi will influence witnesses and destroy evidence. The hearing in the matter will now resume, after the lunch break, at 2.10 pm (London time).
PNB scam accused Nirav Modi’s second bail plea was rejected by the Westminster Magistrates’ court in London on Friday, 29 March. The prosecution argued that he “threatened to kill” a witness and destroyed evidence.
The next date of hearing in the matter is on 26 April.
