(Bloomberg) -- Rush-hour trains from Manhattan are likely to be delayed after a tugboat struck the century-old Portal Bridge in New Jersey's Meadowlands, suspending service temporarily in both directions.
The tug struck the swing bridge, spanning the Hackensack River between Secaucus and Kearny, around 1:10 p.m. Travel over the bridge resumed about 2 p.m., said Jason Abrams, a spokesman for Amtrak, the bridge's owner.
Amtrak sees “no reported damage or signal issues at this time,” Abrams said.
New Jersey Transit said riders face delays of up to 45 minutes in and out of New York's Pennsylvania Station. This morning, passengers experienced major delays because of Amtrak signal troubles and a disabled train.
The bridge is a crucial link on the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak's busiest route, and provides Manhattan service for New Jersey commuters. Though Amtrak wants to replace the bridge as part of its $30 billion Gateway proposal to improve Manhattan-area rail service, President Donald Trump has declined to commit federal funding.
