The Supreme Court has appointed former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud to mediate the Rs 30,000-crore estate dispute involving the family of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, in a move aimed at ending one of the country's most closely watched inheritance battles.
A bench led by Justices JB Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi referred the matter to mediation, observing that prolonged litigation would not serve the interests of the family, particularly 80-year-old Rani Kapur, who has challenged the structure of the “Rani Kapur Family Trust.”
She has alleged that the trust was created fraudulently to strip her of control over key family assets and the wider Sona Group empire.
The mediation process will involve Sunjay Kapur's widow Priya Sachdev Kapur and other members of the Kapur family, with the apex court directing all stakeholders to cooperate in efforts toward an amicable settlement. The court is expected to review the progress of the mediation in August 2026.
The dispute has also led to a freeze on the contested assets by the Delhi High Court, restricting access to parts of the late businessman's estate while legal proceedings continue.
