India's Air Passenger Traffic Up 11% In January

India's air passenger traffic rose 11% year-on-year to 1.46 crore in January from 1.31 crore in the same month last year, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Thursday.
Low-cost airline IndiGo, with the highest market share of 65.2%, maintained its dominance in the sky. It carried 95.22 lakh passengers during the month. Last year, during the same month, the Gurugram-headquartered airline held a market share of 60.2%.
However, Air India witnessed the largest increase in market share, which rose to 25.7% in January 2025 from 12.2% in the year-ago period. The Tata Group-owned airline flew 37.58 lakh passengers during the month.
SpiceJet's market share declined to 3.2% in January from 5.6% in the same month of 2024, while that of Akasa Air increased to 4.7% from 4.5%.
While the passenger load factor of Air India dipped from 84.7% to 84.4%, that of IndiGo declined from 90.6% to 89.8%, and SpiceJet's dipped to 87.1% from 87.4%. However, Akasa Air's passenger load factor rose to 93.7% from 93.3%.
Domestic airlines received around 973 passengers complaints in January. Of these, Fly Big received the most number of complaints, and was followed by Alliance Air and SpiceJet.
The most common complaint, about 37.8%, was related to flight problems, the data showed. However, 100% of complaints were addressed.
When it came to on-time performance, IndiGo outperformed other airlines with a 75.5% accuracy, according to the data. Akasa Air and Air India followed with 71.5% and 69.8% accuracy respectively. Alliance Air’s accuracy was 57.6%, while SpiceJet's was 54.8%.
The overall cancellation rate for January stood at 1.62%. And, according to the data, Fly Big airlines had the highest cancellation rate at 17.74%. At 0.45%, Air India had the lowest cancellation rate. Most of the cancellations were due to weather.
