Harley-Davidson Inc. is working with Hero MotoCorp Ltd. to “ensure smooth transition” for its customers in India, including after-sale services and warranty, the American motorcycle maker said.

Hero MotoCorp had in October signed agreements with Harley-Davidson to develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley brand name. India's largest two-wheeler maker will also take over the existing sales and service operations of the American company in India. That came after the Milwaukee, U.S.-based motorcycle maker exited India to boost restructuring expenses at home and cut costs globally.

“As we change our business model in India, we're pleased to be continuing our journey in the country together with Hero MotoCorp,” Sajeev Rajasekharan, managing director for Harley-Davidson in Asian emerging markets and India, said in a statement Saturday. “We are working closely with Hero to ensure a smooth transition for our riders.”

According to Rajasekharan, Harley-Davidson Inc. has assured its riders that sales of motorcycle parts, accessories and general merchandise, as well as after-sale service, warranty and H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) activities will continue from January 2021 onwards, he said.

After the company's exit from India in September, Harley dealers said they are looking at taking legal action against the company over measly compensation.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said the exit of the American cult-motorcycle maker would lead to a loss of up to Rs 130 crore for the brand's dealer partners in the country along with job loss of up to 2,000 workers across dealerships.
