The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has unveiled a Rs 2.3-crore startup innovation challenge aimed at accelerating the installation of rooftop solar systems and promoting renewable energy adoption across India.

Announced on Saturday, this initiative seeks to identify and support innovative solutions within the country's rooftop solar and distributed renewable energy sectors.

According to a statement from the ministry, the challenge will be implemented under the guidance of MNRE, with support from the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and in collaboration with StartUp India and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

The programme is designed to foster breakthrough technologies and approaches that can significantly enhance the efficiency and scalability of rooftop solar installations, contributing to India's renewable energy goals.

Earlier, New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said India reached a major milestone by exceeding 100 gigawatts in national solar power capacity. By November 2024, solar power contributed to nearly half of the country’s renewable energy generation capacity, amounting to 92.12 GW out of a total 203.18 GW.

This growth has been supported by government policies that incentivise the production and consumption of clean energy. In 2024, solar accounted for 10% of the country’s overall energy, as India generated 22% of its energy from clean sources, including wind power and hydroelectricity
