Air India Ltd., months after its takeover by the Tata Group, plans to acquire AirAsia India Pvt.
The airlines have sought approval from the Competition Commission of India, according to a regulatory filing. “The proposed combination will not lead to any change in the competitive landscape or cause any appreciable adverse effect on competition in India...”
Air India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons Pvt., while AirAsia India is a joint venture—83.6% owned by the Tatas and the rest held by Malaysia's low-cost carrier AirAsia Berhad.
Tata Sons has interests in as many as four airlines—Air India, Air India Express, Vistara and AirAsia India.
