Mother Dairy announced on Monday a Rs 2 per litre increase in the price of fresh milk, citing extreme heat and higher production costs.

Despite facing elevated milk procurement prices for the past 15 months, the largest milk brand in Delhi had refrained from passing on the increased costs to consumers until now, it stated in a company statement. The last price adjustment occurred in February 2023.

The ongoing heat stress prevailing nationwide is causing cows to produce less milk, exacerbating the situation. The company stated, "It is likely to further impact milk production."

Following the revision, Mother Dairy buffalo milk will now cost Rs 72 a litre, while cow milk will be priced at Rs 58 a litre in the Delhi-NCR region.

On Sunday, Amul also announced similar price hikes, coinciding with the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections.

Amul explained that the Rs 2 per litre increase translates to a 3-4% rise in sticker price, significantly lower than the average food inflation.

As part of its policy, Amul passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to producers. Similarly, Mother Dairy emphasized its commitment to dairy farming sustainability by allocating a substantial portion, averaging around 75-80%, of its milk sales revenue towards procurement, ensuring the availability of quality milk.
