The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which sells dairy products under the 'Amul' brand, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre from Monday across the country, according to a statement.
This rise of Rs 2 per litre represents a 3-4% increase in the maximum retail price, which is lower than the average food inflation, the GCMMF said in a statement late on Sunday.
The announcement follows the completion of the voting process for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The GCMMF noted that it has not raised the prices of fresh pouch milk in major markets since February 2023.
"This price increase is due to the rising overall cost of operation and milk production. Our member unions have also raised farmers' compensation by approximately 6-8% over the last year," the GCMMF stated.
As a policy, Amul passes on nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers.
"The price revision will help sustain remunerative milk prices for our producers and encourage higher milk production," the statement added.
