The United States and Venezuela have agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations, marking a shift in ties between the two countries months after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces.
The US embassy in Venezuela said in a post on X that both sides will work together to promote stability, support economic recovery and advance political reconciliation. The agreement follows months of engagement between officials from the two countries after the January operation that removed Maduro from power.

The decision signals a move to rebuild formal relations and expand cooperation in energy and mining sectors as the United States increases engagement with the South American country.
Diplomatic relations between Washington and Caracas had been improving since U.S. forces captured Maduro and his spouse in January and transferred them to a court in Manhattan over alleged arms and drug offences. Maduro has denied the allegations.
Officials from both countries said the new arrangement will support cooperation aimed at stabilising Venezuela's economy and political system following the change in leadership
Energy And Minerals Cooperation
Doug Burgum, head of President Donald Trump's National Energy Dominance Council, said the United States is seeking closer cooperation with Venezuela on energy and mineral resources.
“Just wrapped a trip to Venezuela to advance U.S. interests in the region and strengthen bilateral cooperation on critical minerals and energy,” Burgum said. “At POTUS' direction, we are moving at ‘TRUMP SPEED' to usher in a Golden Age for the Western Hemisphere where America leads.”

Mining And Oil Agreements
The renewed engagement comes as the United States and Venezuela expand cooperation on natural resources.
On Wednesday, Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez and Burgum announced plans to work together to expand mining activity in the country. Venezuela holds large oil reserves and deposits of gold, diamonds and other minerals, including rare earth elements used in electronic devices.
New oil agreements have also been signed between the two countries following the US operation that captured Maduro.
Regional Security Developments
The diplomatic move also comes amid broader geopolitical tensions. On Feb. 28, the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran. The first wave of attacks led to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The developments follow recent US military involvement in Venezuela and the subsequent economic agreements between Washington and Caracas.
