Former Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Ranjit Rae called Nepal's initial decision to ban social media applications "foolhardy" but argued that the major reasons run much deeper, attributing it to government corruption, scams and the priviliged decadence of Nepal's political elite.
He noted that social media videos from the children of these politicians who were termed nepo kids, were inciting outrage by showing off their posh lifestyles.

Former Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri stated that unemployment in Nepal after the Covid pandemic was one of the key greivances that fueled the protests incited by the social media ban.

A protestor interviewed by ANI estimated the death toll to be at 22, and stated that they were students, he also said that 500 were injured. "No wants such a democracy, you can see the Sansad Bhavan (parliament) burning.. see what's happening now, the politician's pride has been broken.." he told ANI.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, before his resignation on Tuesday had alleged that the protests by the young against the social media ban where many were killed were infiltrated by vested interests.
Mashable reported that the figure of VPN sign-up was even higher. Citing a graph shared on the Proton VPN website, it said the company saw an 8,000% jump in new users once the ban took effect on Sep. 4. Sign-ups began climbing on Sep. 3 and surged after access to social media platforms was fully cut off the following day.
The social media ban which was used as the issue to spearhead the anti-corruption protests was lifted by Nepal's government on Monday. The government announcedthat it has withdrawn its earlier decision to ban social media sites amid violent protests by youths that had left at least 19 people dead and over 300 others injured at the time.

The Sashastra Seema Bal that guards the 1751-km-long unfenced international front with Nepal has stepped up security across all its border posts and vulnerable points in the wake of unrest in Nepal, officials said.
All the field commanders of the SSB have been asked to be on the ground and maintain an enhanced vigil, they said.
