Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli Resigns, Private Residence Set On Fire
Protest errupted in the border country on Monday after the Nepalese government ordered the ban of 26 social media sites.
Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resgined on Tuesday after his private residence was set on fire following massive protests led by youth in Nepal over a government order banning social media sites entered its second day.
"Indian nationals in Nepal are advised to exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.
"As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will excercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue," the statement added.
Protest errupted in the border country on Monday after the Nepalese government ordered the ban of 26 social media sites, including Facebook and ‘X’, over their failure to register with the government.
Amid backlash, the Nepali government withdrew its earlier decision to ban social media sites after violence left at least 19 people dead and over 300 others injured.
The MEA statement also mourned the lives lost during the protest and said, "We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with families of deceased. We also wish speedy recovery for those who were injured."
Vested Interests
Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has alleged the protests by the young against the social media ban were infiltrated by vested interests that resulted in the loss of lives of citizens.
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that took place during the protest called by the Gen-Z generation today," the PM said in a statement.
"While we were confident that our children would peacefully voice their demands, the situation that arose due to the infiltration of the protest by various vested interests has resulted in the tragic loss of citizenslives," he said.

The protesters vandalised the residence of former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' at Khumaltar in Lalitpur, PTI reported.
Bhaktapur district administration also imposed restrictions from 8:30 am until further notice in Madhyapur Thimi, Suryabinayak, Changunarayan and Bhaktapur municipalities, it further said.
Notably, Kathmandu Post reported that all flights at Tribhuvan International Airport have been cancelled on Tuesday.
