Iconic fashion designer Bob Mackie, who was best known for being one of the pioneers of sparkly and flamboyant fashion design, died at the age of 87 on Monday.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today," according to a post on his social media account. "He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."
Mackie had designed the classic costumes of celebrities such as Cher and Elton John, whose personalities and brand were reflected in their memorable clothing. His signature extravagance and glamour exhibited in his approach to fashion design earned him nicknames such as "Sultan of Sequins" and the "Rajah of Rhinestones."

Mackie's colourful penchant for feathers, sequins and glamour, were on full display in the 17,000 costumes that he created for the Carol Burnett Show. The fashion designer has also created iconic looks for Hollywood royalty such as Judy Garland, Diana Ross and Marilyn Monroe.

Mackie was the one who sketched Monroe's famous dress, which she wore during her historic performance of the song 'Happy Birthday, Mr President' on May 19, 1962, which was addressed to then US President John F Kennedy, at the third Madison Square Garden for his 45th birthday.
He received three nominations in 1973, 1976 and 1982 for the Best Costume Design category from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences. He also won nine Emmy awards in the field of Costume Design and Art Direction. He also won a Tony award for Best Costume Design in a Musical for The Cher Show in 2019.
Mackie collaborated with Mattel, the makers of the Barbie line of dolls, creating a wide line of limited edition versions of the popular toy brand. Mackie was best known for including various ethnicities and cultures in his designs.
