US President Donald Trump has dismissed recent surveys showing his approval rating at a second-term low, calling them “fake news” and “rigged polls,” even as a new NBC News survey highlights growing public dissatisfaction over the economy and the Iran conflict.

In a post on Monday, Trump reiterated that Israel did not “pull” the United States into war with Iran, asserting instead that the October 7 attacks by Hamas—allegedly backed by Tehran—reinforced his long-standing position that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.

He also floated the idea that regime change in Iran could lead to a “great and prosperous future” for the country.

Trump's criticism of polls and media coverage follows the NBC News Decision Desk survey, which found his approval rating at 37%, with 63% disapproving, including half of respondents expressing strong disapproval.

The poll marks the lowest point of his second term so far and reflects mounting concerns over inflation and US involvement in Iran.

Despite retaining strong backing among Republican voters, support within his base has slightly weakened.

Approval among Republicans dipped to 83%, while those strongly approving fell to 52%. Broadly, only one-third of Americans believe the country is on the right track, signalling deep pessimism ahead of midterm elections.

Economic concerns dominate public sentiment, with inflation and cost of living cited as the top issue. Just 32% approve of Trump's handling of the economy, while 68% disapprove. Many Americans report worsening personal finances compared to a year ago, and rising fuel prices remain a widespread concern.

On foreign policy, two-thirds of respondents disapprove of Trump's handling of the Iran war. A majority also oppose further military action, particularly younger Americans, who overwhelmingly favour ending the conflict.

The poll shows marginal improvement on immigration, though Trump remains underwater on the issue. Meanwhile, his push for stricter voter ID laws continues to find broad public support, even as it faces legislative hurdles.
