Zakir Hussain passed away in San Francisco at the age of 73, his family confirmed on Monday.
Padma Vibhushan tabla maestro Zakir Hussain died at the age of 73 due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, his family confirmed on Monday. As India mourns the legend's death, his last post on Instagram has gone viral.
In the video posted on Instagram on Oct. 29, Hussain shared a serene moment, marvelling at the changing colours of nature during autumn, while capturing the soothing sounds of the wind and rustling leaves.
He shared the breathtaking scene, with blue skies and golden leaves on trees. "Just sharing a wonder moment (sic)," Hussain captioned the post.
In the background, the Tabla maestro could be heard saying, "Trees changing colours and gently swaying in the wind. It's so beautiful to watch. The movement is so graceful and so unbelievable," he said.
Hussain died at a hospital in San Francisco, his family confirmed on Monday, hours after denying media reports on his death. The Indian classical icon was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a rare and serious lung condition. He succumbed to the complications arising from the disease.
"He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the globe, with an influence that will resonate for generations to come," a statement from his family read, as per a report by PTI.
Hussain, considered the best tabla player of his time, is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola and his daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.
Born on March 9, 1951, Hussain was the son of legendary tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha.
Hussain started his career at the age of seven and went on to collaborate with almost all of India’s icons, including Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and Shivkumar Sharma. His collaborations with international artists like Charles Lloyd, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Béla Fleck, Mickey Hart and George Harrison gave Indian classical music global recognition.
Hussain won four Grammy awards throughout his career, proving his excellence in tabla playing. Earlier this year, he won three prizes at the 66th Grammy Awards. Hussain was conferred with Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India, in 2023.
