Maha Shivratri 2025: The festival of 'Mahashivratri' is celebrated on the 'Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha' in the Phalgun month of the Hindu lunar calendar. This falls on the 14th day of the lunar cycle, typically in February or March. This year, the festival will be observed on Feb. 26.

Maha Shivratri celebrates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Considered very significant in the Hindu calendar, the day is observed as a public holiday in more than a dozen states across India. People observe a "day-long fast" on this day as an act of devotion. Kashi or Varanasi, is one the places where the significance of Maha Shivratri is celebrated with great fervour.

Mahashivratri 2025 Shubh Muhurat And Puja Timings

According to Drik Panchang, Maha Shivratri 'muhurat' hours are:

  • Chaturdashi Tithi Begins - 11:08 a.m. on Feb. 26

  • Chaturdashi Tithi Ends - 8:54 a.m. on Feb. 27

  • Nishita Kaal puja time - 12:09 a.m. to 12:59 a.m., Feb. 27

  • Shivaratri Parana (breaking the fast) Time - 6:48 a.m. to 8:54 a.m.

  • Ratri First Prahar Puja Time - 6:19 p.m. to 9:26 p.m.

  • Ratri Second Prahar Puja Time - 9:26 p.m. to 12:34 a.m., Feb. 27

  • Ratri Third Prahar Puja Time - 12:34 a.m. to 3:41 a.m., Feb. 27

  • Ratri Fourth Prahar Puja Time - 3:41 a.m. to 6:48 a.m., Feb. 27

How Is Maha Shivratri Celebrated?

To celebrate Mahashivratri, devotees visit temples and present offerings to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They sing religious hymns in their honour and seek the blessings.

Many devotees also perform acts of bathing the pious 'Shiva Lingam' with water, milk, honey, curd, and ghee.

At many temples, devotees dress as Shiva and Parvati to reenact the story of their marriage, as depicted in the scriptures.

This year, many devotees will also flock to Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on Mahashivratri, to mark the final day of the ongoing Mahakumbh festival.

Is There a Public Holiday For Maha Shivratri?

Maha Shivratri is celebrated as a public holiday in more than a dozen states. This means that banks, courts, schools, and other government and public institutions typically remain closed on this day.

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s calendar, banks in Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka will observe a holiday for Maha Shivratri on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
