Ambedkar Jayanti is observed annually on April 14. The day celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, who is regarded as the "Father of the Indian Constitution”.

Ambedkar is one of the most important and revolutionary characters in Indian history. He played a significant role in drafting the Constitution of India. He was a multifaceted personality with accomplishments spanning economics, law, politics, and social reform.

This year marks the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar. Let us take a look at Ambedkar’s significance in Indian history.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow Cantonment in present-day Madhya Pradesh. He completed his primary education in Satara, Maharashtra, and his secondary schooling at Elphinstone High School in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Born into a Dalit family, Dr. Ambedkar faced discrimination early in his life due to the practice of untouchability. Ambedkar had a brilliant academic career and pursued degrees from world-class institutions such as Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

Dr. Ambedkar's education and exposure in the West played a pivotal role in shaping his worldview and intellectually preparing him to lead as Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution. Once he returned to India after completing his higher education, Dr. Ambedkar started participating in social reform. 

He founded the Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha (Society for Welfare of the Ostracized) and led social movements such as Mahad Satyagraha in 1927 to ensure equal access to public resources for the oppressed castes. Dr. Ambedkar played a key role in uplifting and awakening marginalised communities in India, giving the powerful slogan: "Educate, Agitate, Organise."

He was also a strong advocate of the French Revolution's ideals—"Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity."

Dr. Ambedkar was also a fierce supporter of women’s rights and played an important role in the creation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Important texts by him include "Annihilation of Caste", "Thoughts on Pakistan", and "The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution".

The Government of India has declared April 14 as a public holiday to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar. As per the official notice, all central government offices, including industrial establishments will remain closed on this day.
