Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone race, but its first attempt is betting that it can do more than simply match rivals on hardware.
The iPhone Duo, unveiled at Apple's 'Surprise and Shine' event on September 9, is designed to address one of the biggest criticisms of existing foldables, that they can feel like “two phones awkwardly stuck together”, according to Apple's hardware chief John Ternus.
About the size of a passport when opened, the iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external screen. Apple says the outer display offers 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The key differentiator, however, could be Apple's integration of hardware and software. Apple has redesigned iOS 27 specifically for the foldable, shifting controls and navigation to make better use of the larger display. When unfolded, users can run two apps simultaneously, while the device will also support Apple Pencil with USB-C.
Both displays feature ProMotion, Always On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple has also used a titanium case, a redesigned hinge and a nano-texture finish aimed at reducing glare and making the crease less noticeable.
