To all the shoppers it may concern, artificial intelligence has spread its wings beyond data centres, high-tech offices, and agencies and may now be snooping around in their fridge. Well, their carts, to be more literal and specific.

Sparky — Walmart Inc.'s AI assistant — helps consumers plan healthy meals for the week and prevents them from repeating purchases. The catch, however, is that it remembers what was bought in last week's grocery run.

John R. Furner, the CEO and President of Walmart, seemed to think that Sparky is helping build consumer trust by knowing exactly what they require and assisting them in narrowing down their purchases.

"Someone recently shared with me that they asked Sparky for a weekly meal plan of healthy foods with high protein options. Within a few seconds, Sparky shared recipes and meal kits with the ability to add all the ingredients they needed their basket with one click. Sparky even recognised the ingredients they had recently purchased, both online and store, so they didn't buy something they already had. It's building trust," Furner narrated in the post-earnings conference call.

The AI assistant helps shoppers find their favorite items, synthesise reviews, and make "informed purchase with confidence," according to Walmart's description of Sparky.

Interestingly, the assistant that not only keeps a tab on your shopping patterns and cart items to make informed choices, is also driving you to spend 40% more on an average.

During the same earnings call the CEO also admitted that Sparky has boosted spending among customers, highlighting that the customers and members who use Sparky for shopping spend 40% more per order than those who don't. In the last year itself, customers using Sparky have increased by 70%.

"The number of customers using Sparky is up 70% from last year, and the customers and members who use Sparky for shopping spend 40% more per order than others who don't," Furner said.

AI Has Snuck Into Our Shopping Carts

Agentic AI assistants are cropping into almost everything we do. For instance, Amazon has integrated "Rufus," a custom Large Language Model trained on its massive product catalog, customer reviews, and web data, directly into its app and desktop interfaces.

It helps customers by engaging in light conversations and answering targeted questions, with the likes of "what swim suits are best for beginners?"

Similarly, Instacart's AI model helps customers build their carts based off of meal descriptions or photographs of a handwritten grocery list, which it AI turns it into a ready-to-buy cart based on live store inventory.
