iPhone’s 20th Anniversary: Is Apple Working On Major Design Overhaul?

Apple is set to mark the 20th anniversary of its iconic iPhone in 2027 with what is expected to be a bold redesign, potentially reshaping the future of the device. The tech giant is reportedly working on a new anniversary edition, which could bring significant changes to its design.

According to a Bloomberg report, the anniversary iPhone will feature a special Pro model, distinguished by the increased use of glass elements. This redesigned version aims to celebrate the iPhone's two-decade journey in the smartphone industry.

Alongside the anniversary model, Apple is also rumoured to introduce a foldable iPhone, although it remains uncertain whether this will be the first or second iteration of the foldable device. Apple is yet to release a foldable phone, making it the only major smartphone manufacturer without a presence in this segment. Industry reports indicate that the foldable iPhone may debut as early as 2026, though it is unclear if this would coincide with the 20th anniversary celebrations in 2027.

The redesign could also serve a dual purpose by rejuvenating iPhone sales, which have faced a decline in recent months. According to CNET, the iPhone sales slump has been worsened by external factors, including a new 125% tariff imposed on China under the Donald Trump administration in the US. With many components and iPhones being sourced from China, this tariff is likely to impact Apple's bottom line. In response, the company may be betting on the anniversary edition's redesign to spark consumer interest and boost sales.

Before the highly anticipated 20th-anniversary edition, Apple will launch the iPhone 17, which is expected to follow a similar design to previous Pro models. Since the launch of the iPhone 12 in 2020, the Pro models have maintained a consistent design, with few changes beyond colour updates and the switch to titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro.

However, Bloomberg reports that the iPhone 17 Pro is likely to feature a new rear camera layout. While the three-lens setup will remain, the camera module will span the entire width of the device, creating a more seamless look.

Apple is also reportedly planning a thinner version of the iPhone 17, potentially named the iPhone 17 Air.

One of the most intriguing questions surrounding the 20th-anniversary iPhone is its name. Since the 2027 release would traditionally align with the iPhone 19, it remains uncertain how Apple will proceed with its naming conventions. As noted by CNET, Apple has previously deviated from its standard numbering system for milestone moments, such as when it skipped the iPhone 9 in favour of the iPhone X to mark its 10th anniversary. Given this history, the iPhone XX could be a potential candidate for the 20th-anniversary edition, following the Roman numeral tradition.
