Google has rolled out new accessibility updates to its products across Android and Chrome, and added new resources for developers building speech recognition tools. The company is integrating Google AI and Gemini into core mobile experiences more closely to customise the experience for vision and hearing.

Get Details With Gemini And TalkBack

In order to give blind or low-vision individuals AI-generated descriptions for images, Google had last year integrated Gemini's capabilities into TalkBack, Android's screen reader. It is now extending Gemini integration to allow users to post queries and receive answers regarding photos. For example, users can ask follow-up questions regarding the make and colour of a guitar they see in a picture. Users can also ask Gemini about their whole screen, for instance, about the material of or discounts on a shopping item.

Expressive Captions

Expressive Captions uses AI to record what someone says and how they say it. It delivers real-time captions for anything with sound. Google has created a new duration feature on Expressive Captions for when words are dragged, for example, “amaaazing shot” or “noo.” Users will be given additional sound labels so that they can recognise when someone is cleaning their throat or whistling.

Easy PDF Access On Chrome

Earlier, users could not utilise their screen reader to interact with a scanned PDF accessed via desktop Chrome browser. Now that Chrome has Optical Character Recognition, people can use screen reader to read these PDFs and highlight, copy, and search for content.

Reading With Page Zoom

Similar to how it functions on Chrome desktop, Page Zoom now allows you to enlarge the text you view in Chrome on Android without changing the browser layout or browsing experience. Users can apply the option to all the pages they visit or just specific ones, and can choose how much they want to zoom in.
