ChatGPT May Soon Enable In-Chat Shopping With Shopify Integration: What This Means For Users
The move would turn ChatGPT into a full storefront for seamless shopping without leaving the conversation.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT may soon let users buy products directly as Shopify is working on integrating directly into the chatbot. Instead of linking to external sites, ChatGPT would show prices, reviews and a 'Buy Now' button within the chat, if implemented.
A report by the Techradar website said that the move would turn ChatGPT into a full storefront for seamless shopping without leaving the conversation. The feature could give Shopify merchants access to ChatGPT’s users, while making OpenAI an e-commerce platform, the report added.
At present, asking ChatGPT for shopping recommendations of certain products prompts the chatbot to present a detailed overview of the product, availability and related information. The AI platform also presents a range of links to potential sites from where these purchases can be made. Once the user clicks on the link, they are redirected to the new shopping page.
However, this process may soon change with a potential integration of Shopify. Rather than redirect users, ChatGPT could display products directly within the chat. If users click on the 'buy now' link provided in the chat, they won’t be redirected to the new shopping page. Instead, they will be able to make the purchase seamlessly without leaving the platform. The move would evolve ChatGPT services, marking a shift from its existing capabilities.
According to the report, the integration would transform ChatGPT into an AI-powered shopping assistant, providing users with a more convenient and streamlined experience. No specific details are available on the potential timeline for the rollout of this feature.
The report suggested that the move could potentially benefit Shopify merchants and save costs for them. Currently, merchants have to heavily invest in search engine optimisation and advertisements to gain visibility. With Shopify’s potential integration into the bot, merchants would gain more direct access to millions of users.
The report also said that Microsoft’s Copilot and Perplexity might also be working on similar capabilities.
