Thinner smartphones grab eye-balls and Apple is looking to do exactly that with its likely new addition to the iPhone lineup. Yes, Apple’s upcoming iPhone upgrade in 2025 could include a new model: iPhone 17 Air. Apart from the tech boost it is expected to feature, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that it could be around 2 mm thinner than the current iPhone 16 Pro and feature the company’s first in-house modem.
iPhone 17 Air: The Thinnest iPhone To Date
An iPhone 17 that is 2 mm thinner would measure about 6.25 mm, since the iPhone 16 Pro is 8.25 mm thick. It will be thinner than even the iPhone 6 (its sleekest device yet), which is 6.9 mm, making it Apple’s thinnest phone to date.
However, there is more to the thin design than meets the eye. According to Gurman, reaching this level of thinness will open the door for Apple’s upcoming foldable gadgets. These devices are rumoured to launch in 2026 or later. The iPhone 17 Air will also be the company’s attempt to expand its “Air” devices, which include its slimmer iPad and MacBook models and which have been quite popular with users over the years.
iPhone 17 Air To Pack Apple’s First In-House Modem
As per Gurman, Apple’s first in-house modem, codenamed Sinope—which is anticipated to make its debut in the new iPhone SE, which is likely to be launched in March—is likely also to be included in the iPhone 17 Air. The in-house 5G modem, which is smaller than Qualcomm’s 5G modem chips, would help build the slimmed-down iPhone 17 Air without compromising battery life, camera, or the display quality. According to Apple, the chip is designed to be integrated with other company-designed components in a much better way to conserve space within the device.
iPhone 17 Air: Expected Features
A 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz—currently only available on Pro models—a single 48-megapixel camera on the back, and a 24-megapixel selfie shooter are other speculated features of the iPhone 17 Air. In order to handle Apple Intelligence-driven features, it might possibly be powered with the A19 chip and pack 8GB of RAM.
